As the World Cup action in South Africa ramps up to its climax, the world of online gambling sports betting is doing the same. It means plenty of profits for the subsequent internet casinos, but it also has given police and enforcement officials more opportunity to take down online gambling schemes in regions where the practice is still illegal. The raid of the week took place this week in Israel, where police launched a very successful drive against a particularly successful online gambling ring.

The raid resulted in 28 arrests, after officials crashed in on 40 different locations throughout the nation. According to a report by the newspaper Haaretz, the police action was timed to a tee, as teams raided homes, offices and even business locations, such as currency exchange kiosks. The latter was a key element in the ring’s ability to circumvent the system by avoiding credit card companies and other financials completely. Instead, they provided money-clearing services directly to gambling websites themselves, simultaneously breaking laws against tax regulations, gambling, as well as money laundering.

The police report described the set up in the following way: cash cards were used, filled, and distributed at dozens of locations throughout the country, each of which was worth NIS 100 and NIS 5,000, depending on a potential online gambler’s spending limits. Once the card was purchased, the serial number hidden behind a scratch off section was coded into online casinos, depositing the pre-paid money into the accounts. Cashing out was simpler, as the decision resulted in direct wires to the gambler’s bank accounts.

The ring was clearly well established, including a very effective means to distribute the cards to bettors. This year’s World Cup resulted in a surge of business for the illegal online gambling scheme, and though it has not yet been determined just how successful the ring was, it’s believed that they facilitated hundreds, if not thousands of customers.
