Though recent online gambling news posts have been chock full of World Series of Poker updates, the most recent news in regards to Congressman Barney Frank’s attempts to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 has become available. The Poker Players Alliance of America was actually one of the first to pass on the update, spreading a rumor last week that has been confirmed this week: that Frank’s bill would be up for yet another hearing in the very near future, a move that has some wondering if change is around the corner for the American online gambling market. Frank himself confirmed that his proposal would once again be on the table of discussion for the House Financial Services Committee, the same committee for which Frank sits as Chairman. His Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, aka HR 2667, will be under debate once again as of July 21st. The proposal had already gotten some time in front of the committee, as it was presented last December, though this time less time has actually been set aside for debate than last winter. Another member of the committee was also able to confirm that at least for now, no additional changes were anticipated on the bill. A number of groups stand by, ready to support the bill and its sister-proposals, all of which are actively working towards legalizing online casinos in the US. The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association, iMEGA, has been very public with their interest in the issue, as has the PPA. The two organizations have been known to work together in the past as well, with iMEGA Chairman Joe Brennan saying this week, “The i-gaming lobby has been working too hard for too long. It deserves more than a hearing. But, well wait and see who will appear as witnesses. Id like to see John Pappas finally get the opportunity to appear before the House Financial Services Committee and make the case for the players.” |
