Though the 41st edition of the World Series of Poker has been suspended until November, when the final table of nine players will come back together to battle for the bracelet, news associated with the WSOP brand has not yet ceased, with an announcement coming in this week that an expansion may be the next move. Division Chief for Harrah’s Interactive, the online gambling division of Harrah’s Entertainment, Mitch Garber said this week that there was serious consideration being made to expanding the WSOP franchise past the London and Vegas markets. The announcement comes on the heels of months of similar plans, as more and more online gambling companies make significant investments and moves to launch their businesses into the newly liberalized markets in France and Italy. Garber’s interview can be found compete in this month’s edition of the industry magazine, Inside Poker Business. It would be a purely strategic move, he said, that would take the WSOP titles and bracelet tournaments past the US and UK markets. He did say that although no final decisions had yet been made, they were expected to come to some sort of definitive plan within the next six months, hopefully by the end of the year. It would be the first expansion by the franchise since the launch of the World Series of Poker Europe in 2007. “We know we would like to strategically expand the bracelets beyond the US and the UK,' Garber said. “We haven't figured out if [the events in Italy and France] will be individual events, or part of the WSOPE or tied to a larger series,” said Garber. “You will see a lot more marketing from us and attempts to tie in the TV and tournament to the website and acquire customers from that event. Then our next focus is on France and Italy.” |
