Though its already been revealed to the rest of the online gambling community that an unlikely source has been named as the submitter of arguments against the common definition of online gambling, Malta’s Minister of Finance has opened up this week to explain why they are creating the waves in the European Union. According to a statement by Tonio Fenech, they opposed the suggested definition because they saw ulterior motives behind its wording, and as one of the homes to internet casinos, felt they needed to speak out.

The opposition to the definition has certainly not gone unnoticed, as it has caused a certain amount of upheaval among the member nations, most of which would like to decide upon a common definition to ease the enforcement of trading laws, which dictate freedom and equal services among them. According to a report by the Times of Malta, Fenech was asked about Malta’s opposition by the Labor MP Alfred Sant, and pressed to admit that they had seen some ulterior motives in the proposed definition.

Apparently, the wording included in the definition could be used to protect the existing online gambling monopolies already in place in some member nations, something worth opposing. It seems to matter little that at this point, the Maltese representatives are more or less on their own, though that could change as other groups recognize the issue with the definition. Fenech said that the want and need to protect the livelihood of state monopolies was a very real concern, giving some EU nations plenty of reason to word their proposed definitions so carefully.

He also confirmed that some national restrictions on online gambling had been accepted by the European Court of Justice because of money laundering and other illegal side effects. Fenech stated that the existing laws in Malta had already covered those problematic areas. Fenech also denied the supposition that Malta’a arguments could be construed as opposition to legalized internet gambling, as he claimed the two issues were unrelated.
