Police Decline Involvement

A report from The Age newspaper down under has shed a new light on the developing and ever fluctuating world of online gambling in Australia, as this week the federal police refrained from getting involved in a case that would have pitted the officials against locals sports clubs. Though the law down under prohibits offshore online gambling companies from catering to residents, there is no outline for keeping those internet casinos from signing sponsorship deals with local sports clubs, representing themselves not only in the world of soccer, but rugby and others as well.

Surprisingly the request for police to get involved with the issue came from a branch of government, as the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy asked for law enforcement to step in and involve themselves in the relationships developing between National Rugby League Teams and online poker sites. After some consideration, the leadership of the Australian Federal Police have declined the request, instead choosing to leave well enough alone in a legally grey area.

Not surprisingly the Department to issue the complain is under the direct influence of the cabinet minister Stephen Conroy, who has made himself a clear enemy of the growing internet gambling industry. He is one of the leaders behind the Australian attempts to establish a censorship program, and has been a safekeeper of the infamous ISP blacklists that supposedly contain some internet casino domain names.

The question of sponsorship stems from contracts from two particular NRL club with online poker websites. Full Tilt Poker, a brand well recognized by the online gambling community, signed on to sponsor the Sydney Roosters, while their competition Poker Stars, supports the Cronulla Sharks. They have set up branched-off domain names with the tag ‘.net. to circumvent the law prohibiting foreign firms from doing business in Australia. The .net sites exist only to advertise over the web the original, and full service online gambling sites.
