While most responsible online gambling companies have already put into place protective means against problem gambling and addiction, the fact that the availability and convenience of internet casinos provide an outlet that is not always under operators’ control is undeniable. This week, a sad tale out of Oldham, United Kingdom should act as a warning to those who feel they may not be able to control the impulse to gamble, especially in online casinos, as the consequences can be far reaching.

One bank manager was so deep into her problem gambling that she began funding her habit by stealing money from her employer. Nicole Taylor, 39 years old, managed to siphon off £245,000 from company cash reserves before she was caught, over an 11 month period. All of the funds were taken to feed her addiction to online casinos, with Taylor offering up the only defense she had: that she had hoped to win a jackpot and repay the money before she was discovered.

Her role as bank manager at the Cooperative Bank in Oldham gave her access to the funds, which auditors determined should have totaled to £300,000. However, when they checked the balances, they came to a measly £31,350, immediately causing an in depth investigation that led them to Taylor. Taylor claims that it started innocently enough, when she had been called last year to resolve a number of small discrepancies. Unable to so in one case, she covered up the mistake, and realized she could do so again and take the money herself.

Taylor did manage to admit not only to her addiction to internet gambling, but also to all seventeen counts of fraud involving £29,170 of the money, and another 133 counts for an additional £215,220 of stolen money. The courts gave her little leeway, sending her to prison for two years, with the statement that “[She] persistently abused the trust placed in you over a period of some 11 months, and I have been unable to conclude that anything but an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate.”
