Though the Commission’s recommendations are apparently not worth their weight, the Federal Prime Minister has said that they will set up another, more select committee to make similar suggestions for the future. Kevin Rudd said that representatives would be included from the three Commonwealth government bodies, as well as the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

"We will discuss these issues with states and territories...there are various rules about caps on machines, so we have to discuss that with them," said Minister Rudd. In the meantime, the rest of the online gambling community is lamenting the revelation that liberalization for the Australian internet casino industry is looking less and less likely as there are no indicators that Communications Minister Stephen Conroy would soften his position on the issue.

Conroy’s name has been in the internet gambling headlines as the censorship issue continues. Though China is the leader in the measures, Australia has been seriously considering instituting a similar censorship program. Problem gambling is yet another hot topic, as the Productivity Commission estimated there to be as many as 160,000 residents suffering from the issue, with another quarter of a million at moderate risk.

The issue has developed into an expensive one, as well, as the resolution of problems for Australians addicted to online gambling has racked up costs as much as A$4.7 billion a year, a key point in having the Productivity Commission recommend regulation. It’s not just online casinos that have been tracked in causing issues, as apparently electronic poker machines, also known as ‘pokies’ have been traced to problem gambling as well.
