Though the lack of debate in recent months have implied that some sort of peace or resolution may have been reached between the online gambling meccas of Antigua and Barbuda and the United States, any sort of illusion has been shattered this week with the announcement that the government representing the two nations is taking into serious consideration a resurgence of their threat to file a series of World Trade Organization sanctions against America, once again rehashing the issues surrounding the US’ ban on online gambling.

It’s a debate that is more than three years old, as the World Trade Organization the ruled in favor of Antigua regarding the US’ refusal of acceptance of their online gambling firms. Since then, with the persistence of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, nothing has been done by the American government to comply with the WTO’s decision, a matter that Antigua is now reminding the US is important, and isn’t going to go away. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer said in a statement this week that they are more than willing to impose a sanctions should change not come – and soon.

In fact, he said, the conditions for online gambling companies based out of Antigua have really only gotten worse since the “agreement” was made in 2007. Spencer said that it was his intention to go straight to the top, as he was pursuing a meeting with President Obama himself to find an acceptable resolution. The US is at fault, he claimed, for much of the suffering seen in Antigua and Barbuda, with their continued prohibition on one of the main stocks of the islands: online gambling

“In light of the obvious unwillingness of the United States to reach a negotiated settlement that takes into account the contribution of the sector to the economic well-being of Antigua and Barbuda,” Spencer was quoted as saying, “We have brought the matter before the Conference of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, which has supported Antigua and Barbuda's position on this matter from the inception.”
