A recent report by the MECN research company takes a close look at the online gambling industry in Switzerland, and the findings of the analysis are quickly catching the attention of the internet casinos community. Currently, the nation is moving towards a healthy liberalization of their internet gambling market, a move that was initiated by the government without any outside force. The recent study was completed through a partnership between MECN and the Swiss legal group MME Partners. The model that Switzerland is developing could possibly act as a great example for other nations, such as the United States to follow. According to the MECN study, the population difference should really make no difference in the success of the online gambling liberalization effort; Switzerland is home to about as many people as currently reside in London alone. But the willingness of the program isn’t the only interesting aspect of the blooming internet casino community in Switzerland. As Martin Oelbermann of MECN elaborated in his report, they also differ in their focus. Many of the countries opening up online gambling markets are targeting growth for both sports betting and poker; contrastly, the Swiss are emphasizing the traditional casino games. For those companies who have difficulty finding regulation for their lack of poker and sportsbook products, the Swiss market could very well be key. That’s not to say that poker will be ignored. Rather, many of the considered proposals are including poker in the legalized platforms, a sure fire hope for the skill versus chance debate that continues to plague the American governments. "The similarities between the Swiss and the US gambling market are clear," says Oelbermann. "Aside from the World Trade Organisation dispute, both countries can freely contemplate a potential liberalization without being pressured by third parties such as the European Commission when reviewing and drafting their regulations. Last but not least, the gambling markets of the US and Switzerland are structured in similar ways." |
