Snow Bet Issues

It seems that a serious mistake was made by the very large, and ridiculously powerful online gambling company Ladbrokes this month, else the firm is trying very hard not to pay out to a winning customer. Allegations of unfairness continue to fly on both sides, between the well-respected internet casino and a sports betting gambler, who claims that the company owes him millions, but no resolution has yet to be made despite the press coverage of the developing issue.

The winter season saw a number of larger internet gambling companies offering a special event in their sports books, allowing punters to wager on whether or not it would snow in London. Although it did not, (according to the definition, snow would have had to fall on a particular location) one gambler took advantage of some other snow bets, building up two accumulator bets that would pay out millions should they be satisfied. Though London did not necessarily have a White Christmas this year, 24 other towns did, making Cliff Bryant (52) a very rich man, by his own calculations.

Bryant took two £5 accumulator bets that snow would fall on 24 different towns throughout Great Britain on Christmas Day. Against all odds, his guess was correct, and the win would have paid him out around £7 million. Ladbrokes, however, disagrees, and is relying on a Rules and Regulation technicality to avoid paying out the jackpot, infuriating many in the online gambling community. They claim that the bet was accepted by mistake by the system, and was never a valid wager. They have offered to pay out the individual wagers, rather than the accumulator bet, which would pay Bryant a mere £31.78 compared to £7.1 million. Bryant and his legal team have understandably refused their offer. He claims that they should have made the rules clearer in combining bets, and the system should not have supported his bet if it weren’t valid.

“They are one of the leading bookmakers in the country and I think they ought to do their homework a bit better in future,” Bryant was quoted as saying. “If I make a mistake in my work like that it costs me dearly and I think the offer should be a lot more generous than they have made,” he added, opening the door for settlement negotiation.
