Early December saw some active weather in London this year, and hundreds dashed to their local bookie of choice – be they online gambling reps, or live sports book operators – to take advantage of a White Christmas bet. The near-miss lack of snow on Christmas Day had the bookies breathing a sigh of relief, especially considering the high humidity, low temperatures, and heavy snowfalls elsewhere in the nation. According to most of the internet gambling sites that offered the White Christmas bet, the definition of the bet was laid out in the following terms: “one flake of snow falling on Buckingham Palace on December 25th.” So between the two strikes of midnight, punters all over Great Britain were looking for that one flake, but never got it. The last time that such a snowflake was to be found falling near the palace was in 1999. Nearby, however, snow did manage to drop in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as Nottingham, with the white spreading as far as Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland. Had the snow managed to drop in London, however, the funds that would have been paid out by bookmakers would have been rather impressive, making many a bettor rich for Christmas. "We have potentially dodged a monster payout,” said a spokesman from William Hill. A contemporary over at Gala Coral’s online casino, David Stevens, echoed his sentiments, saying, “The odds on a White Christmas in London had fallen from 8-1 to 7-4, the shortest odds this decade, and we had taken more bets on it happening than ever before. It was odds-on that there would be snow in Glasgow, so punters have something to cheer, but overall we’ve escaped a festive hammering, and it’s a happy Christmas for the bookies.” |
