Weighted Contribution for Rake

While many of the online gambling poker networks have said they intend to change policies in order to attract fewer winning poker players, and more ‘fishes,’ the Microgaming Poker Network is the first to make such an update, which was made effective the 5th day of the new year. The internet casino software company confirmed the policy change for their rake calculation, with a statement clarifying that it seemed the most fair way to get the results desired.

A couple of the other poker networks have threatened to fine poker operators if they cannot increase the ‘shark’ to ‘fish’ ratio on their sites, potentially penalizing internet casinos for their players’ wins. But Microgaming has found a difference incentive, one that will in all likelihood not affect players’ experiences, without fines or ‘shark’ bans in place. Instead of utilizing the Contributed Method for rake calculation, Microgaming’s poker network has now switched to the Weighted method.

“The introduction of the new Weighted Contribution will reward operators with a greater proportion of looser, 'fishy' type players, encouraging them to target these players proactively whilst making rake back as a practice less attractive within the Network,” said Andrew Clucas of Microgaming’s Poker Network. "It is believed this initiative will encourage the right sort of contributing players into the Network whilst discouraging the grinding type of behaviors which can be so negative to the health of the Network.”

It is hoped that the change will be enough, as others in the online gambling community think it unfair of companies mandating who can play at the sites. Big winners who tend to prey on unsuspecting beginners are more than discouraged, as it can wreck the online gambling sites’ bottom line and profits. Players with high skill levels are encouraged to frequent high stakes poker tables, where they can match wits – and cash – with more suitable challengers.
