It’s particularly news that China’s censorship of the internet is an invasion of privacy, freedom, and rights for its citizens, nor is it necessary to point out that the Big Brother system for the web has resulted in bolstering illegal gambling in the black market. But it is interesting to note that the government apparently feels the need to toot their own horn, continuing to issue warnings to their citizens that the ‘internet purification’ system is, in fact, in place for their own good. According to a recent report by the Associated Press, the Chinese government has recently released a statement to remind the public that the censorship of the internet in China is a need, developed to protect the people from ‘sites deemed harmful to society,’ such as pornography, online gambling, etc. Beijing’s policing of the web is among the most stringent in the world, with the officials saying that it’s absolutely necessary to the fight against online crime on behalf of the country’s stability. Rewards will soon be available for member of the public who contribute to the censorship database with their information regarding questionable websites. The new year will include a focus on identifying a myriad of websites that operate out of China despite their official registration being located offshores, pinpointing harmful domain names and rented cyberspace with ferocity. Despite the government’s insistence that all of the blocking is done to protect the public, opponents of the system continue to insist that the censorship program is a front for the blockage of political content, ensuring that anti-Communist propaganda is stopped in its tracks. |
