The time we’ve all been waiting for, it seems could be right around the corner, as the executive director of the Poker Players’ Alliance has informed his membership. As Congressman Barney Frank’s bill comes closer to being debated on the open floor of the House of Representatives, now is the time for action, as John Pappas has called his one million PPA members to action, asking them to once again reach out to their political representatives, asking for the passage of the bill which would effectively overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, legalizing both poker and online casinos in the US.

Pappas posted a video on the PPA’s home website this week, requesting the cooperation of all of the group’s membership, gearing up for one final push before the bill, HR2267, falls under consideration in Congress. With Frank estimating that it will pass out of the House Financial Services Committee in the next few weeks, entering into the main arena to be considered as a viable option to raise revenue for Federal and State governments. Members have all been encouraged to lobby their representatives regarding the proposal, with Pappas reminding them that past efforts to come together for change have been quite influential. The bill is expected to be formally introduced in early February.

The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2009, HR2267, was drafted by Frank and introduced in May of 2009 to the Financial Services Committee, of which Frank is Chairman. Support of the bill has been more than was originally expected, and bi-partisan; just this January saw the sign-up for both New York Democrat Eliot Engel and Los Angeles Democrat Charlie Melancon, bringing the total of co-signors to 65. The decision in December to push back the enforcement date for the UIGEA by six months also contributes to setting the stage for success like it has not been done before for online gambling.

“This will be the first time - ever - that there will be a vote on licensing and regulation of Internet poker and Internet gaming in general,” said Pappas. “We need bi-partisan support, and we need your help in achieving that. Over the next few weeks, you’ll be hearing more from us about things you can to do to alert your members of Congress about this important committee vote and why they should vote in support of HR 2267, so get ready to advocate for poker.”
