It seems that the battle surrounding online gambling in Australia will likely be a hot topic in 2010 as land casino operators continue to oppose the legalization of internet casinos in the nation. Many in the field believe that growth in the online gambling sector will naturally mean a drop in business for the live casinos, resulting not only in a loss of profits but even a loss of jobs. The release of the Productivity Commission’s recommendations that internet gambling be legalized has only incited more arguments. One of the leading voices for the opposition is a group of land casino operators based in New South Wales, who took the time to warn their federal government last week that the approval of online casinos could mean hundreds of lost jobs for the brick-and-mortar sector. They claimed that in addition to lost business, the necessity to comply with stronger restrictions on traditional casinos would mean a need to cut back on employment, just to stay afloat. According to once source fighting the legalization, if all of the proposals made by the Productivity Commission were to be followed, the revenues to land-based casinos could drop as much as 30 percent, triggering as many as 200 closures of different betting venues, and the loss of hundreds of jobs. The statistics were provided in a communication from the trade association Clubs NSW, but no source was cited. The region’s state government, however, was a little more vague in their bleak predictions, though no less opposed, writing: “Internet gambling has the potential for exponential growth, and without proper regulation, it could pose serious problems to society and problem gamblers.” |
