Last week’s admission by a senior NBA (National Basketball Association) executive that legalized online gambling in the US stands as a ‘huge opportunity’ for the professional sports world has been bolstered this week with further proof that sports leagues may be softening on their outlook in regards to internet casinos. The National Football League in the US announced this week that destination locations known almost exclusively for their gambling offering will now be able to advertise at NFL games, including the Super Bowl. Cities like Atlantic City, Reno and Las Vegas will now have the opportunity to reach out to a new demographic – that of NFL fans for the first time. The official stance of the NFL has not yet changed; according to the books, they still oppose gambling, internet gamboling and the promotion of gambling, but now cities that do just that will be allowed to advertise at games, and during commercial breaks during televised games. The trial period for the new agreement has been set to run from January 4th to the end of February. According to a statement released by an NFL spokesperson, a final decision on the new advertising standards would be made at the conclusion of the trial period. At that time, the call will be made on whether to continue banning gambling cities and destinations from NFL affiliations, or to extend the new rules well into next season. The trial agreement still prohibits specific casinos and certain hotels that offer casino platforms with their resort services from advertising. According to the Associated Press, any venue wishing to submit ads must not include any imagery or references to gambling whatsoever. |
