Though Congressman Barney Frank continues to make promises into 2010 in regards to the strides he intends to take in the fight against the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and the effective prohibition of online casinos in the United States as a whole, the conditions for now will see little change. More and more examples of the ineffectiveness of the UIGEA continue to pop up, however, with illegal gambling rings developing and profiting, not unlike far less liberal countries in other parts of the world.

That’s not to say that the illegal gambling schemes aren’t being identified and broken down by authorities. They are. And those involved are being punished for their participation in providing online gambling services to US citizens, despite the fact that offshore companies are able to be accessed simply because of the nature of the beast. Some American operators are even coming forth, admitting their involvement, such as Joseph LaForte. Having already been incarcerated on unrelated charges, LaForte has plead guilty for his involvement in the operation of an online gambling scheme from early 2005 through 2006.

He made the admission in open court in a US District Court in New Jersey that he directed bettors to place wagers through an unidentified online gambling site, and plead guilty to the one count charge of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business. The site was based outside of the US, but LaForte did profit financially from his involvement. The Associated Press reported that he will face up to five years in prison and could be liable to pay fines totaling as much as $250,000. LaForte will face sentencing on April 6.
