Tales of generosity in the online gambling community are becoming more frequent in recent years, with the profits of high paying poker games often being shared with those less fortunate than the winners. This winter season has already highlighted the online casino poker professional Dusty ‘Leatherass’ Schmidt, who plays poker for the Transition Project; Don Cheadle and Annie Duke continue their work through the Ante Up for Africa campaign. This new year brings to the spotlight Elizabeth Bennett-Martin, a Canadian player who has used her success in internet casinos to win her some tournaments, and benefit potential lawyers in Cambodia. Elizabeth Bennett-Martin hit the poker field flying, and she has dedicated herself to making sure that other profit from her good luck. With her sights set on high scores for this year’s Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure, she has said that her goal is to win enough money to be substantial in benefiting the Cambodian Legal Education for Women program, for which she acts as partner. Her charity was launched by herself and her Toronto law firm, the Bennett-Gastle PC to help women who want to become lawyers, halfway around the world. Both educational expenses and living expenses are targeted by the charity group, increasing the chance that the students will have of graduating and becoming practicing lawyers. Cambodia had a mere 528 lawyers in all the nation last year, a miniscule number compared to their population of more than 14 million people. Bennett is a rare gem: she was one of only 14 women to play in the entire PCA tournament, and only seven of them, including her, qualified through an online casino. She managed to turn her $24 buy-in into a 25th place finish out of the 1,347 players, winning her $40,000 for her work. She has said that this year, she has every intention on improving on her finish, having already secured herself another seat through a satellite qualifier. Her intentions for the PCA Ladies Event are even higher- should she win, she’s pledged to donate all winnings to the charity. |
