The second piece of conclusion has fallen into place this week, finally allowing some closure to the sad tale of Bet on Sports and their illegal online gambling operations in the United States from years ago. The Justice Department revealed that a sentence has been determined for the last big executive name in the case, that of David Carruthers, who was formerly the CEO of the now defunct company. Though the demise of the Bet on Sports internet gambling empire has long been over, Carruthers will have to serve another 33 months in jail before the story is done for him. Carruthers, a middle-aged British citizen, found himself at the center of the investigation and prosecution for Bet on Sports’ online gambling activities in the US, following the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. Despite the law’s prohibitionary nature, Bet on Sports continued to cater to the American market, placing them on the Justice Dept’s very bad side. The chase for justice was on, and prosectors have now made clear that illegal betting activities will not be tolerated. Originally, Carruthers had entered a plea bargain, only to withdrawal from the deal to plea not guilty. He recently plead guilty to the charges, with the sentencing determining that 33 months will need be paid before he’ll be a free man once again. It’s an expected conclusion to the three and a half years that Carruthers has waited for the decision, all of which he spent under house arrest following his arrest while trying to flee to Costa Rica. His former partner, Gary Kaplan, was sentenced to 51 months last year for his involvement in the scheme to continue servicing American consumers, despite the UIGEA. Bet on Sports has long since gone bankrupt, owing more than $16 million in debt. "Illegal internet gaming operations continue to be areas of concern for IRS," said Toni Weirauch, Special Agent in Charge of IRS-Criminal Investigation. "With our law enforcement partners, IRS will continue to play an enforcement role in the illegal gaming industry and other illegal offshore activity." |
