The British Columbia newspaper The Public Eye took a close look at the issue this month with a report on the continued debate, opining that the eventual compliance of the B.C. government to the privatization trend in the online gambling world will only benefit them. The possibility of the region’s insistence on keeping their monopolistic claim on internet casinos will do more than push gamblers to illegally access offshore online casinos, and result in a needless loss of tax funds.

According to the piece, all of the potential revenue benefits would be lost, which would easily sum to millions of dollars. Meanwhile, the government would have need to enforce the monopolistic laws, resulting in a cost to identify and prosecute those who gamble illegally, a waste of money in an attempt to censor private internet gambling webstes.

For these reasons, the British Columbia government is more likely to seriously consider expanding their registration to include regulated and established offshore companies, with the IGC continuously adding to their case. The opportunity for tax revenue seems to be the key in the debate, said the Public Eye article, as any additional state funds would be more than welcome in the tough economy. Changes, however, will have to be made to the Criminal Code, as the gaming Minister Rich Coleman pointed out, saying that the IGC’s proposal currently wouldn’t be possible with existing laws. Change isn’t impossible, however, with betting Canadians hoping that the negotiations on the matter could possibly be resolved in upcoming months, in the favor of liberalizing the Canadian online gambling industry.
