Though plenty of the changes that the internet gambling industry will see in the upcoming months will be revealed for the first time in London during the IGE-ICEi conference and exposition, one of the more interesting tidbits looked forward to by online casino attendees are the changes that the licensing regime in Alderney will see this year. The alterations to the new licensing framework will be introduced during the conference, a series of updates that are expected to reflect current trends in the online gambling industry, especially as they apply to Europe.

The new licensing structure will be based on a modular system, allowing internet casino operators to choose the parts that they feel are the best fit to their business model. It’s an increase in the flexibility for firms, and designed to reduce costs for many, maintaining the region’s reputation in Europe as the most economical jurisdiction for regulation and licensing.

Speed will also be increased for applications, as the new Category 1 license can now be obtained in as little as 4 to 6 weeks. For lesser needs, there is the Category 2 license, which has been designed to cater to the needs of the growing B2B division of online gaming, providing some of the fastest services available in the world. Also, there will be the introduction of a new system that allows licensing for hardware equipment located outside of Alderney, broadening their versatility in regards to working with large corporations.

“However well thought through, a significant revision of the licensing legislation fills you with some trepidation as to how it will be received," said Robin LeProvost, Alderney’s director of eCommerce Development. "But I think we can say, even though it is early days, [that] the new scheme seems to have hit exactly the right note, and enquiries and applications have shown a significant increase.”
