China’s Ministry of Information Industry and the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television have applied strict new regulations in regards to online audio and visual content in the country. By the end of the month these new laws will go into effect and are designed to be a concentrated effort in censoring inappropriate content on the internet. Part of what the Chinese government has stated as inappropriate content is online gambling. Needless to say gambling is not the only thing that makes the government unhappy. Any violently, sexually or politically sensitive material is being regulated. All audio or visual content on the internet will be controlled by the State. The Chinese government also states that those who do provide audio and video services over the internet should insist on serving the people, serving socialism and abide by the moral code of socialism. According to a notice all websites falling under the new rules must not reveal State secrets or portray socially, politically or morally harmful situations. China has received much heat from reporters of Paris, France stating that China’s government is an ‘enemy of the internet’. China has literally blocked thousands of websites for containing material the State did not approve. Countless others have been thrown into prison for posting information the new law states is wrong. If a website wants to put any kind of audio or visual content on the internet they must get a broadcast license that will be renewable every three years. “Those applying for Internet audio-visual service licenses must at the same time be solely State-owned enterprises or enterprises whose shares are controlled by the State,” read the notice. |
