Players must “ante up” to begin a game (Some sites offer free entry). The dealer deals the appropriate number of cards to the players one at a time. Cards may be dealt either face up or face down, depending on the version of poker being played. During the course of the game players are dealt additional cards or exchange cards. At the end of each round, all bets are gathered into the central pot. When a player makes a bet, opponents have the options to fold, call, check or raise. If one player bets and no one chooses to call, the player who bet wins the pot. Once in the middle of a game, players may choose to bluff, which is a primary feature of poker. It is the ability to bluff that could make or break the hand and your ability to win. If more than one player remains after the last round each player shows their hand. This is called the showdown. The player with the best hand played wins the pot. These are the most basic rules of poker. There are different versions of the game which change the rules slightly: Community Card Poker players receive few dealt cards. Most of the cards a player will use to form a hand come from some community cards that are dealt face up. All players will share the community cards to form their individual hands. The object is to make the best five card poker hand using the community cards and their own face down cards. Two or four individual cards are dealt in the most popular variations, Texas Hold'em and Omaha Hold'em, respectively. In Draw Poker players each receive five or more cards, all of which are hidden. They can then draw, or replace, one or more of these cards a certain number of times. In Stud Poker players each receive five or more cards. The biggest differences between stud and draw poker are that players are not allowed to draw, or discard, any cards in stud poker and that part of a players' hand in stud is exposed rather than the entire hand being hidden as in draw. |
