Craps is known as, probably correctly, the most complicated casino game. It is definitely the one with the most rules, and time playing is required to ‘get the knack.’ Don’t shy away to quickly, or allow yourself to become intimidated- there are a number of basic bets that are easy enough for even a novice. Craps is a dice game. It is based on the game Hazard, most recently of English origins, though it may be able to be traced back the Crusades, with influence by the French along the way. What we know as American Craps today was brought to New Orleans by a politician, Louisiana land-owner and gambler by the name of Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville. It gained popularity most effectively through the African-American community. ![]() To play the game of craps, gamblers wager their bets on the outcome of roll(s) of dice. Although internet casinos, like their land-based counterparts, typically work with a set table to accommodate the rules, simpler versions of the game were said to be popular among soldiers. It can be played by one or more players, against the house. Gamblers take turns rolling the two dice onto the table, to determine a random combination and score. This person whose turn it is, is called the “shooter.” The game is played in rounds, with the first roll of a new round being referred to as the “come-out roll.” On this first roll, if the total of the two dice is 12, 11, 7, 2 or 3, it is the end of the round, a new one begins immediately, and another “come-out roll” is tossed. The result of a 2, 3, or 12 is called ‘craps.’ The other numbers, 7 or 11, are an immediate win for players, called a ‘natural’ or simply ‘win.’ If any other number were to be rolled on a come-out roll, the number is called a ‘point,’ and becomes the objective for subsequent rolls in that round. A marker is placed on this number (any of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) on the table for the remainder of the round. The round end when the shooter rolls the same number again, or a 7 is hit (‘seven-out.’) At the end of a round, the shooter changes; the player to the original shooter’s left has his turn to try. ![]() Betting options are nearly innumerable. Many of these include wagering on whether the point number will be rolled again, or whether the round will end in a ‘seven-out.’ Other wagers can be on a total value being rolled, or a total rolled before a 7 strikes. The craps table is run by 4 employees in a casino. Your online and internet casinos will have these roles programmed in. Typically, a boxman would be standing guard over the betting chips, handing out chips to players and supervising the dealers. There are two dealers who are to either side of the boxman, and their responsibility is to collect bets and distribute winnings. The stickman stands on the opposite side of the table than the boxman, and is in charge of the active play on the table: assigning the dice to the appropriate shooter, calling the rolls, and managing bets in the very center of the table. When a new shooter is assigned, he must bet the table minimum on either the “pass” or “don’t pass” lines, and is given the choice of 5 dice, from which he must choose two to roll. There are certain roll-throwing restrictions common to discourage cheating. For example, it is preferred to have the shooter throw the dice with one hand only, and with sufficient force that the dice hit the opposite wall of the table. If one to the dice leaves the table (ie. flies out of the space to the casino floor) it may only be used again if it passes the boxman’s inspection, though typically a shooter will simply choose another die from the remaining three. The ‘Pass’ and ‘Don’t Pass’ lines are the most common bets, and are required to participate as a shooter. “Pass Line”- the bet is won on the pass line if the result of the next roll is a 7 or an 11. If the result is 2, 3, or 12- the wager loses. If it establishes a point (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) and that point is rolled again, it is a win. If a point is established and a 7 is rolled before the point number surfaces again, the bet loses. “Don’t Pass”- the exact opposite. The bet wins if a 2 or 3 is rolled on the come-out, and loses if a 7 or 11 surfaces. A 12 rolled is a draw and helps the house sustain their advantage. If a point is established and seven-out’s, the Don’t Pass bets win. If a point is gotten twice, the line loses. Betting on the Don’t Pass line can be looked down upon, or ever so far as to be referred as playing the dark side, because it goes against traditional play, and most probably, the majority of the table. There are dozens of bets that can be played on the specially designed Craps table, that be online gambling, or in-house casino. The tables are standard, and with time, questions, and of course, a clear explanation of the website you are utilizing, you’ll undoubtedly learn all the wagers that would most interest you. Craps tend to be very high energy games, when done live, and even in a simulated version in an internet casino, encouraging your fellow gamblers can enrich the experience exponentially. If you gamble for fun, undoubtedly, you’ve already been enjoying Craps for years. |
