Last week it hit the online gambling news community that the internet casino mogul Party Gaming has indeed been in talks with fellow conglomerate Bwin Interactive, discussing the possibility of a merge or strong partnership in the very near future. The announcement has been followed up this week with the revelation by a number of internet gambling industry experts, who have opined that consolidation is inevitable, taking into account the worldwide economic status, and fast growth of the online casino market.

The possibility that two of the biggest names in the industry would partner up has sent ripples through the market, as it would put other competitors at a huge disadvantage. Media coverage on the topic continues to surge, with the well-respected name of Reuters at the forefront of the headlines. According to many, if Party Gaming and Bwin do manage to come together is a merge, it could very well act as the catalyst to set a new standard in the online gambling industry, creating a domino effect of firms to create mega-corporations. “The first deal gets everybody else to run,” one analyst put it, saying, “You don’t want to be the last one left without a partner.”

The talk has put a spotlight on other internet gambling companies such as 888.com, Sportingbet and even Playtech, bringing online casino software firms into the mix. Traditional betting groups like William Hill, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes have the strength of their land-based venues, but even they are beginning to open doors to the possibility of uniting powers.

One of the industry analysts who believes rather strongly that merging and acquisition is inevitable across the online gambling market is that of Wyn Ellis, employed and representative for Numis. "We believe that consolidation talks are widespread across the online gaming sector and that most companies could be considered to be both potential industry consolidators and takeover targets," he said. Not to imply that the specific deal between Bwin and Party Gaming wouldn’t be excellent: it would bring together differing strengths with the sports betting leads that Bwin carries, and the online casino domination that comes with the ‘Party’ brand.
