While this week’s release of Atlantic City’s January numbers have been more than depressing for the region’s hope for a quick recovery to the recession, the state of Nevada seems to be doing a lot better. The official numbers from the Nevada Gaming Control Board have been released and already being analyzed by online gambling officials, determining that the casinos managed to make huge profits from this year’s Super Bowl event, winning from gamblers as much as $6.9 million. Bettors flooded the Sin City to place their bets, which totaled $82.7 million at casinos alone. Given the continued ban on online gambling in the US, the numbers associated with internet casino bets on the Super Bowl are not included in the recent statistics. But given the supreme match-up between the underdog New Orleans Saints against the Indianapolis Colts, the win by the Saints 31-17 resulted in happy profits for bookies based out of Vegas. Compared to the Super Bowl in 2009, bookies managed to make$179,000 more in rake and profits on the $1.21 million more placed in bets. And the extra revenue came through in spite of a high number of cancellations for trips from the north eastern US, as bad weather kept thousands of would-be gamblers from making the trek to the desert. The executive director for the race and sports book for the Las Vegas Hilton casino and resort spoke to the Associated Press on the exciting weekend, saying that it was a surprise considering the national perception of elective spending in the US right now. "We thought the Super Bowl was a great measuring stick of the economy and we think the economy is just a little better than what it was last year," said Jay Kornegay. "A lot of things happened in this game that normally don't happen. Those are all props that normally go the other way." His estimates showed his casino accepting 14 percent more bets than last year, though the average wagers were lower than normal. The numbers for bets placed through the online gambling industry have not been released, but as always are considered a factor as internet casinos continue to steal business from the land-based industry. |
