Yet another independently researched report has been released for the internet gambling industry’s scrutiny by the UK Gambling Commission. This particular study was based off of two different set of questions put forth to respondents in the region, with the entire project being paid for and commissioned by the Commission, though the surveys themselves were conducted by ICM Research. The first set of inquires addressed the participation levels of UK residents in relation to all different types of gambling, from the live and in-person venues to the different kinds of remote and online gambling. The second set of questions was more specific to the internet casino world, divvying sets up between mobile gaming, lottery kiosks, utilizing computers versus phones and even including interactive television. The results were hardly surprising, but create more evidence for the Commission to support future decisions in relation to change to regulation and the growth of online gambling in the UK. According to the final analysis, of the 7,000 surveyed, 55.2 percent had gambled in one way or another in the four weeks prior to the inquiry. By far, the most popular form of gambling was that of lottery tickets, with 45.7 percent of gamblers having said they purchased a National Lottery ticket. Good cause/society lotteries were chosen by 10.9 percent of respondents, and scratchcards were the favorite for another 10.8 percent. Bets on horse races, slot machines and private gaming took 3.4 percent, 3.3 percent and 3.3 respectively. In the world of online gambling, only 10.5 percent of respondents had engaged in a form of remote betting in the last month, with half of those only using National Lottery products, albeit online. It did indicate a growth, as similar numbers from the previous year showed 9.7 percent enjoying internet gambling, while 2007 saw only 8.8 percent and 2006 saw 7.2 percent. More men than women were gamblers – in both surveys – though the age brackets were different: while traditional gamblers were mostly over the age of 45, online gamblers aged between 18 – 44 years. |
