A recent report on one of the favorite players in British snooker has caught the online gambling community by surprise as confirmation has been received that Stephen Lee has been arrested. Lee is only the latest player across a number of European sports to be investigated for alleged participation in sports betting corruption schemes. West Midlands authorities took custody of the snooker star in relation to questionable betting patterns. The 35-year old has since been released on bail, and no word has been had on when the case might head to court, though most conservative estimates put it at three to four months hence. Though the police arrested Lee, and questioned him, no charges has of yet been filed against him formally. His spokesman said that he did not expect any charges to be filed, as Lee was innocent of all accusations. The Guardian newspaper reported that Lee was arrested on the suspicion of cheating, and that his name became entangled in a case being jointly investigated by the local police, and the UK Gambling Commission. While the World Snooker division of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association hasn’t officially taken a stance on the developing story, they did release a bland and politically correct statement following a number of inquires made by representatives for the press and online gambling community. The statement read: “We are aware of the recent news articles concerning match-fixing and are awaiting further reports. In instances where the Gambling Commission commences an investigation into a match, the WPBSA work together with the Commission to assist in their enquiries and the WPBSA will hold their own investigation open pending the conclusion. However, neither the Commission nor the WPBSA will release information surrounding a betting matter while an investigation is ongoing.” |
