A fascinating new petition developed by online gambling company StanleyBet has caught the undivided attention of not only the internet casino community, but of the European Union parliament as well. Supporters of the petition – including players and other online casino operators – are calling for the immediate enforcement of the EU laws demanding the free movement of goods and services in competitive markets. According to the petition, too much leniency has been given in too many cases, leaving the online gambling companies out in the cold unfairly.

The nation at the center of this renewed debate is that of Greece, and their market’s exclusionary practices. StanleyBet has made a commitment to fight their protectionist legislation, and have developed this week’s petition as the next piece of the battle. In response, the European Parliament Petitions Committee has acknowledged the failure by the Greek government to comply with the international laws, and have flagged the issue as a case worth of an investigation by the Commission.

The petition in question first was incited last year, following the arrests of both customers and employees of StanleyBet for their participation in online gambling, detained for their violation of the national gaming monopoly laws held in place by OPAP. Stanleybet continued with their operation of betting shops in the islands, despite repeated warnings by the police, until all of the establishments had been forcibly shut down by authorities.

The petition isn’t without its support, either, as Sir Robert Atkins has been a leader on the topic, calling loudly from his position as a member of the EU Parliament for the Commission to enforce open trade among services for some time. Greece, he says, is one of the principal countries that blatantly refused to comply with the trade law. Additionally, all efforts to apply for licensing within Greece made by StanleyBet have been refused, says the company, leaving them no other venues to resolution.
