A Lucrative Mistake

While most individuals who gamble do so knowingly if not responsibly, one particular player who did not mean to put his money on the line is glad now of the mistake he made. While the online gambling industry is designed to enforce responsible betting choices, the live lottery available in the ‘real world’ isn’t nearly as preventative. In Rob Anderson’s case, however, the mistake of placing an unwanted bet paid off – a lot.

The US online gambling news blew up last week with the Kentucky news of their state lottery being hit and won, granting Rob Anderson an extra $128 million! Following Anderson’s win, it became apparent that the 39-year old father of two had been the fortunate victim of a clerk’s mistake- a change that has the attention of the online gambling industry. The error was made while Anderson tried to buy three separate $1 lottery tickets to give to friends as gifts. The gas station clerk, however, misunderstood Anderson’s request, and put all three Quick Picks on one ticket, rather than three different slips. That mess-up resulted in Anderson keeping the ‘oopsie’ for himself, and one of the Picks turned out to be worth $128 million on the draw!

Anderson was so nonchalant about the instance, that he didn’t even bother to check his own lottery ticket until well after the numbers had been drawn. The lucrative mistake was then immediately apparent. Anderson has since been friendly with the press of both the local news and the internet gambling community, courteously answering questions. He has said that he and his wife intend to take a trip to Hawaii to celebrate, spending another portion of the funds on a new car. No decision has yet been made as to whether they will take a one-time payment or receive sums over the next 30 years, annually.
