The State of California was notified this week by nine Indian tribes of their official opposition to the current efforts to legalize online gambling for the game of poker on an intrastate system. According to a report by the Desert Sun newspaper, the tribes sent the government a joint letter detailing the points of their arguments against the proposal, exactly one day prior to the informational hearing for the internet gambling initiative. The Senate Governmental Organization has yet to comment on the receipt of the letter.

One of the leading voices on the issue belongs to the Morongo Bank of Mission Indians, the same tribe that only months ago had their eye on exclusive rights to an intrastate system for online poker. Since they won’t be able to monopolize the new online gambling proposal, they are now claiming that legalization and opening up permissions to non-Indian gambling establishments will be so detrimentally destructive to their revenue that the whole idea is a ‘no go.’

“We are writing to clearly state our strong opposition,” the letter reads, “rejecting arguments that legalised intrastate poker would financially benefit the state.” The tribes were nine: including signatures of tribal chairs representing the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians near Temecula; Jackson Rancheria of MiWuk Indians; Lytton Band of Pomo Indians; Pala Band of Mission Indians; Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians; Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians; United Auburn Indian Community; and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians.

The letter called the proposal ‘ill-conceived,’ despite their previous desire to hold total control over intrastate online gambling, pointing out what they termed ‘fundamental flaws.’ The Senate Governmental Organization Committee intended their informal hearing to speak to the needs of land-based casinos looking to become part of the project. Tribal leaders, problem gambling reps, and ISP’s are all expected to attend.
