The cases in Kansas seems to be wracking up as yet another accused in ongoing internet gambling cases pleads guilty to involvement, agreeing to the terms of a deal presented by the prosecution. According to a report by the Kansas City Star, Michael V Badalucco has plead guilty for his involvement in an online gambling scheme that traversed state and federal lines to take advantage of offshore betting facilities in Costa Rica. The deal will likely result in some jail time, but will let Badalucco off the hook in terms of other cases. The federal probe into sports gambling rings continues in Kansas this month, with another conviction tallied on the feds’ sides. Badalucco is the latest to admit that he ran a sports betting business, profiting from his willingness to take and pay out bets for offshore companies. According to the details of his case in particular, only one of a long line of inquires made by the Grand Jury last year, Badalucco was one of a group who provided a toll-free phone number to bettors looking to place wagers; the digits were routed through Missouri to Arizona before linking to an online gambling company based in Costa Rica. In addition to phone access, members were also given restricted access to an internet casino, though the authorities caught Badalucco in phone activities, and so charged him accordingly. His agreement to cancel bets for one of his customers on Feb 17th, 2009 was his point of failure, having been caught red-handed, identifying himself as ‘George’ to complete the transaction. Court documents allege that he regularly paid out winnings to his clients from online gambling wins, as well as collected cash in person from bettors. His willingness to plead guilty will likely result in him paying as much as 2 years in jail time, though with a clean record and good behavior, it will probably result in anywhere between six months and one year in reality, before probation kicks in. Prosecutors have, however, agreed to not call him as a witness in any of the other cases, regardless of whether the other accused shared online gambling schemes with Badalucco or not. |
