A new state has joined the ranks in the US of those aiming for legalization of online gambling, as Iowa has launched an initiative that would permit online sports betting. The state, like most others, has come to the plan as a result and solution to the issue of finding more tax funds, and still has a long way ahead of it before sports betting has a chance of becoming legal. Surprisingly, the proposal has already been voted through the State Senate committee vote, putting Iowa one step closer to joining the internet gambling industry. Should the measure find itself being made into law, gambling on professional sports would be allowed in the state’s 17 different casinos. The Associated Press reported that it’s passage by the committee moves the bill on to the Full Senate State Government Committee, where debates should commence in the coming weeks. One of the proponents for the bill is Senate President Jack Kibbie. The Republican politician feels that sports betting holds no threat to the morality of residents, and as the funds are badly needed, there aren’t many strong arguments against the legalization. “We’ve heard about sports betting since I was a pup,” Kibbie said, “It’s already legal in many foreign countries. I’m just saying why not Iowa?” When Congress banned online gambling – including sports betting – in 1992, only four states had grandfathered clauses allowing them to continue offering the product: Delaware, Nevada, Montana and Oregon. Until Congress repeals the ban, these four are the only ones who can legally allow sports betting in both live venues like casinos, or over the web, through internet gambling sites. Kibbie is hoping to add Iowa to the list. The argument that black market gambling is already rampant all over the US is back out on the table, with residents of Iowa making their bets anyways through offshore internet gambling websites. Legalization, Kibbie points out, would just bring the tax funds in state, providing much needed income. |
