The most report from the Remote Gaming Association has been released to the internet gambling community this week, speaking on the subject of integrity as it applies to online casino services in the UK. Unfortunately for some, the data that the report presents is highly unlikely to make all interested bodies very happy, as the trade association determined that enough funding already exists to secure and protect integrity in the market. The report was a very close look as to how betting – especially with the convenient resources of online gambling available – affects professional sports leagues throughout the world. It was an analysis that took care to look at the issue from a commercial perspective, postulating as to how market trends affect (positively or negatively) integrity in the sporting world. The upside is that the RGA was unable to find proof that betting related corruption was on the rise; on the contrary, the RGA’s Clive Hawkswood said they determined other factors that held a greater risk potential to the integrity of sports such as drug-enhancements for performance. The report was intended not only to track market affects, but also to determine how much money would be needed for prevention, a piece of the puzzle which surprised all interested parties. According to their findings, plenty of money is already invested in making sure corruption plays no part in sports betting in online casino, a detail that some found rather disappointing as it would mean no increase in spending is needed. Some governments had been using the theory that a higher risk for corruption should mean that internet casinos should pay more in taxes. The report issued by the RGA this week will be a blockage for those legislators looking to squeeze additional funds out of the online gambling industry. "We completely understand why governments wish to support and promote sports and we are not seeking to challenge that,” Clive Hawkswood was quoted as saying, following the release of the report. “However, given how wealthy many of the major professional sports are, and remembering that licensed gambling remains one of the highest taxed industries, it is galling to many in the betting industry that sports believe that the betting industry should make an even larger contribution than it already does. It is disappointing when so many people at State and EU level appear willing to support them without even looking at the facts or hearing our side of the argument." |
