False Coding by Internet Casinos

Apparently a new twist has made its way into the constant battle between online gambling companies and unfair legislation prohibiting access and use of internet casinos in the US. Though the final implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has yet to become enforced (due this summer) many American credit card companies are already denying transactions and processing for online casinos. That fact has pushed a number of firms to begin coding their transactions in a way that won’t be recognized and flagged by the credit card companies, thereby dodging the denials.

Visa and Mastercard have both been known to reject transactions from internet casinos, but despite the restrictions, at least one internet group has pledged to keep their coding standards honest. Poker Stars, the world’s largest online poker network, has promised to keep their transaction codes true to their brand, and has said they will not falsely code to avoid detection, regardless of American business lost. In a statement issued to the press this week, they have actually announced their opposition to such a practice, and has guaranteed to use only legitimate and respectable business practices until such time that the legalization issue can be properly resolved.

Visa and Mastercard have since pledged to go after any companies caught miscoding, and as Poker Stars does not, says their statements, they have been unaffected by the recent crackdown. “PokerStars does not, nor ever has engaged in the practices of mis-coded credit card transactions," the Pokerstars statement emphasises. "We allow the issuing bank to decide whether the transaction should be approved or declined according to the correct coding of that transaction as 7995. In such instances it is company policy to provide the player with an alternative payment method.”
