An alarming new account of the very choosy Dutch tax authorities has recently come to the attention of the online gambling community, sending up flares over the unfortunate circumstance of one particular poker player. Many of the details have been published on the popular internet casino message board twoplustwo, alarming many responsible players in the sector of the possibility that the taxman would demand a huge chunk of winnings from Dutch residents.

But it’s not a definitive law, according to those same sources. According to the legislation for the region, Dutch authorities have the right to claim up to 29 percent in levies on winnings and funds won through foreign and offshores internet casinos, but the tax doesn’t apply to those winnings won within the region. And the authorities do not enforce it on a continual, or standard basis: while come players have come forward, admitting their payment penalties, others have claimed the won internet gambling funds on tax returns to be let go without tax costs at all.

The latest tale comes from a resident who was one of the unfortunate few, now being held responsible for the 29 percent of winnings according to the amended Betting and Gaming Tax Act. He’s a relatively well known poker player, frequenting the online gambling sites on a regular basis, but Steven Van Zadelhoff’s attack by the tax bosses is being viewed by many as taken too far. Zadelhoff reported that not only was his home raided, but that documentation for his financials was seized, and that the police are demanding that he pay thousands in Euros in back-taxes. As a member of Everest Poker’s Team Everest, he works as a sponsored player for the online casino, and is often the beneficiary of funds, money that goes out as quickly as it comes in.

"We were and still are in negotiation with the tax office. My client has never suggested not wanting to pay his debts. He is leaving for Malta because he needs to relax in a peaceful environment without worrying about taxes,” said his lawyer to the press. Zadelhoff is most well known for his action at the No Limit Hold’Em tables, as well as showing up for battle in live tournaments.
