An article included in one of this week’s Guardian editions brought to light an interesting new angle on the developing ‘integrity in sports’ issue. While the RGA report on the topic found no strong correlation between corruption in professional sports and online gambling, another review commissioned by the UK government is calling for a special unit to further investigate the same questions, supposedly already answered.

The new unit will be titled as the Sport Betting Intelligence Unit, designed especially and exclusively to investigate those cases that do result in corruption in professional sports. The panel will be under the direction of former football star Rick Parry, who heads up the recommendation for the new group. According to the proposal, the new unit would be an authority in its field, responsible for the thorough investigation of suspicious cases; their findings would then in turn lead to disciplinary action under criminal law, or sports’ rules.

While the Unit’s establishment is the proposal most being talked about in the online gambling community, other suggestions have also come to light, each as a solution for the growing number of cases correlating internet gambling with professional sports. Codes of conduct for susceptible sports will likely see change in the upcoming year; definitions of ‘cheating’ in Gambling Acts will be reviewed for clarity; even a comprehensive education program to prevent claims of ignorance in the future was presented. But Parry’s Unit has the backing of many, and the intention of following through on the majority of the other proposals.

"I want to thank Rick Parry and the rest of the panel members for submitting a very focused and interesting report,” said the Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe. “I will now consider the recommendations that have been put to Government and announce next steps in due course. I am very keen to keep up the momentum on this vitally important work. There is no place in sport for cheating of any kind and we must make sure we're doing all we can to protect its' integrity.”
