Last week’s news that the Loto Quebec movement to legalize internet gambling in Canada had seen some positive progression is followed up this week with the disappointing reality that despite Loto Quebec’s cooperation with the British Columbia and Atlantic Lottery companies, there has been a less-than-friendly reaction from the Kahnawake Mohawk tribe, a major regulatory body for online casinos operating all over the world. It’s a note that has hit the internet casino community with a bit of surprise, given the common interests, and more importantly proximity.

All reports from Canada agree that there is little if any synergy between Loto Quebec and the Kahneawake organization. The tribe’s hosting and operation center is located just 30 minutes out of Montreal, but their exclusion from the provinces laws have resulted in a detachment from the current developments of Canadian online gambling. The lack of involvement was questioned this week, in a number of industry inquiries, and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake did respond to Loto Quebec’s actions, concerned that the liberalization of the National Lottery will have a negative effect on their market’s income.

The gaming portfolio chief for the Mohawk Council, John Dee Delormier actually implied that the movement to open up the market into Loto Quebec’s control could end in disaster, saying, “I think Quebec believes that it is going to take the online gaming industry by storm. That is certainly not the case. They are entering an already established market and are only offering their games to a limited player base. It is a recipe for disaster for them.” He continued: “At no time did they consult us on what they were doing, and maybe they should have asked for help, because their short-sighted view on e-gaming will end up with egg on their face.”
