The conclusion of the California Senate Governmental Organization Committee hearings this week has resulted in a flush of perspective from a number of industry related groups, with the Poker Players Alliance having the most to say about the potential legalization of online gambling to support intrastate poker. The PPA, represented by executive director John Pappas, alluded to state officials that without the support of the Alliance and corresponding online poker community, their attempts to successfully establish and regulate the new program would not go well.

The Committee’s hearings were thorough to say the least, as evidence was presented both for and against the proposal to bring at least one branch of internet gambling into California. The obvious pro for the measure is the desperation of the state’s government to keep their fiscal heads above water, as California could be considered the most desperate for taxation monies. The PPA was on the ‘pro’ side of the field, maintaining their official stance that online poker can indeed be effectively regulated in the West Coast state, and that it should be done by the end of the year.

"The PPA respects the due-diligence of the Committee to investigate "if" online poker can be regulated, and we stand here to tell you that it unquestionably can be regulated, and in fact, already is being regulated, very effectively, across the globe in well-respected jurisdictions," said Pappas, who testified along with PPA's California State Director Steven J. Miller. "The U.S. Congress is debating federal bills that would establish a licensed and regulated online poker marketplace, which the PPA strongly supports."
