continued from Benyamine Wins Tourney Title - 1 Meanwhile, the first prize of $400,000 out of the $1.5 million prize pool went to champion Benyamine, as a disappointed Luke Schwartz pouted. Schwartz’s banter and boasting provided plenty of good television for the media coverage, but apparently he was unable to back his talk with action, as he took the runner-up spot at the end of the day. He even went so far as to say that he thought he deserved the win, but acknowledged that sometimes that’s just the way things go. Of the prize pool, online gambling group Party Poker provided $300,000 for the guaranteed total. This was Benyamine’s first tournament this year, and one of the only major tournaments that he’s played at all in the last year. Known first and foremost for his action and records in the online casino circuit, Benyamine said that it felt very good to find validation in a live tournament title, going so far as to admit that he’s not used to it. “The whole time I never thought about winning, I just wanted to do what I thought was right,” he said after the win. “Position in these final tables can help and I didn’t do anything special today, I just got hands at the right time and played my own game. I really enjoyed the format and competition – I’m sure it will make great TV.” As the eliminations got tighter in the approach to the final table, one of the strongest players was that of Phil Laak, who quickly was kicked out himself from the last seats, courtesy of Benyamine. Roland de Wolfe followed soon after, with Daniel Negreanu joining him at the rails in short order. Safina managed to last til third, when the heads up between Benyamine and Schwartz really got down to business. Schwartz had the chip lead by more than double, holding 1,320,000 to the Frenchman’s 580,000. It wasn’t to last long, though, as the roles were promptly reversed, and Benyamine crowned champion soon after. |
