While the debate surrounding the supposed ‘free trade of goods and services’ issue in the European Community is a long way off from ever finding solution – if ever – the issue was thrown back in the pit this week as rumors circulated that the new head of the European Commission might be more lax in enforcing the treaty law. Michel Barnier sat down and gave a statement, however, to assuage those fears, speaking to the European Parliament and answering questions out in the open.

One of the bodies in attendance of the statement was that of the European Gaming and Betting Association, the one organization that mostly encompasses the proverbial views of the internet gambling market in Europe. As most online casino in the region are members of the group, their representation was more than welcome, and they reported afterward their gratefulness for Barnier’s willingness to be so frank about the ongoing issue.

Barnier did confirm the recent report by the Commission Legal Service on the topic of the Court of Justice’s case on Santa Casa, pointing out that the singular finding does not change the fundamentals of the Commission’s position on free trade and subsequent infringement of trade. He clarified that the Santa Casa case was very specific to Portugal, and their national monopoly operator for online gambling companies, and that all cases for European communities will be looked at on a case-by-case basis.

“With several Member States currently reforming their gaming and betting legislation, this is an important confirmation that the Commission will not stand by while Member States introduce restrictions that go against fundamental principles of the EU,” said Sigrid Ligné, Secretary General of the EGBA. “We believe that the respect of Internal Market rules in our sector will promote high standards and improve the protection of players throughout the EU.”
