Online gambling experts are in disagreement in regards to what could be causing such an unbalanced progression of revenue in regards to the economic statuses of both Las Vegas and Atlantic City. While the prior has managed to focus on their resorts and other attractions to keep the tourism afloat long enough for gamblers to filter slowly back into the city, the latter is still struggling, with fewer solutions becoming available as to how the region might bounce back from the recession. While Las Vegas seems to be recovering – albeit gradually – the east coast gambling city is suffering as much as ever.

The official numbers for the month of January have been released for the city, causing an new exacerbation of concern for the city. According to the most recent release, the eleven casinos that populate Atlantic City managed to win only $294.2 million in the month of January, showing a decline of 8.5 percent from the same period in 2009. Slot machine activities were also down, having dropped 7.6 percent, and even table games saw slippage, down 10.1 percent from the year before.

Though the online gambling industry continues to flourish, showcasing success in the face of Atlantic City’s failure, the question is what the live casinos can do about it. The Associated Press reported that only 2 of the c casinos in New Jersey came away with profits: The Showboat saw increases in the January wins of 4.4 percent while the Marina, run by conglomerate Harrah’s Entertainment, saw a meager 2.8 increase from the previous year.

Famous families’ names suffered the most as the Trump Taj Mahal and Hilton’s Atlantic City saw the biggest drops. Atlantic City Hilton saw losses of 26.4 percent, while the Taj was down 23.7 percent. Considering the city’s best year was 2006, when the casinos won $406 million that January, there’s still so much more recovering to do.
