Even as former Party Gaming’s Anurag
Dikshit got a light sentence this week, it seems that the spirit of the
season has befallen others being held in custody for their online gambling
crimes as well. The most recent news from the prosecution indicates that
those accused in the Bet on Sports scandals have similarly been sentenced
to home probation, as Norman Steinberg made the decision to plead guilty
to charges of conspiracy. His prosecution will mark the end to yet another
illegal online gambling case, bringing it to a close and allowing the US
feds to move on to the next. Additionally, his cooperation with authorities, which was once described as him being a ‘key player’ in the historic prosecution of the Bet on Sports online gambling group a few years ago, has won him not only probation, but permission from the courts to serve his time in his private home in Costa Rica. US District Court Judge Carol E Jackson oversaw the brief proceeding, which also can with the stipulation that Steinberg drop his charges against the US; he previously has carried with him an outstanding civil lawsuit naming the US government as defendant. Because of its secretive nature, no additional information has become available in regards to the mysterious case. The authorities, on their side, withdrew several additional charges related to racketeering in exchange for Steinberg’s guilty plea to conspiracy. Steinberg’s sentencing was more than a year following Gary Kaplan’s who was sentenced in August of 2009 to three years in prison in addition to the payment of $43 million for his own involvement in the Bet on Sports debacle. David Carruthers, the firm’s former CEO, paid $75,000 for racketeering and served 33 months. |
