Lesniak Raises a
Pen in Protest - 1 Senator Lesniak even goes so far as to pull Governor Chris Christie into the mix, calling him out for not doing enough to fight the unfair law. Whether their reasoning falls because the fight against the federal government is too difficult, or they don’t consider it a cause worth while, it’s an opinion that Lesniak doesn’t share, who claims he will continue to fight for equality in online gambling. His promises don’t fall flat, either, as Lesniak has gained somewhat of a reputation for being a strong-willed man who fully intends on seeing change in the US internet casino industry. He has been the author behind a number of legalization bills, some of which are still waiting to be presented to the New Jersey legislature. The bill to see sports betting legalized will be heard early in 2011, while his name is also high on the list of plaintiffs in an ongoing court case against the federal government on the same topic. The fiscal motivation is certainly there, with one Las Vegas company called Club CalNeva estimating that if Lesniak is successful, and secures betting permissions in New Jersey, it could easily generate as much as $1.3 billion in gross wagering revenues, totaling $120 million in taxes for the state. The money will do much to keep jobs in Atlantic City, which has struggled over the last two years to meet their bottom line. Sports betting could well be the needed piece of the puzzle to bring tourists back to Atlantic City, as gross profits topping out over $1.3 billion for racetracks and racetracks is a very real possibility. "That's a lot of jobs, a lot of profits for New Jersey businesses and a lot of revenue for the state,” wrote Lesniak, continuing, “And that's why I have filed a lawsuit in federal district court to overturn the federal ban on sports betting, which gives an unfair and unconstitutional advantage to Nevada and Delaware at the expense of New Jersey and other states. That's why I also sponsored legislation to legalize online gaming, limited exclusively to New Jersey residents to avoid the federal ban on interstate Internet gaming.” |
