The continued misfortunes of the
gambling city Atlantic City in New Jersey have the government in a bit of
a frenzy to prepare themselves well for the winter break by pushing
through a number of bills designed to help in regenerating some income for
the struggling industry. At the head of the pack is bill S490, written and
introduced by Senator Ray Lesniak, which would legalize online gambling in
the state of New Jersey on an intrastate program level. The bill is set and ready to go before the Budget Appropriations Committee in the coming days, where it will be subject to a few small, and relatively minor changes to the financial provisions written out in the proposal. Following passage there, it will move on to the Assembly floor for full debate, and hopefully, easy passage to ratification by the State Governor. Senator Lesniak has promised the online gambling industry that he will do everything in his power to have the bill set and ready for passage, even confident enough to put a date on his goal to have approval on or around January 6th of 2011. Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver isn’t quite in the same rush, making a point of saying that even as she supports legislation that will help Atlantic City bounce back, doing it right the first time is of utmost importance. "The Assembly moved three gaming and horse racing bills through the Budget Committee today and plans to continue working on this issue into early January to be sure we get it right," she said, referring to a series of bills designed to improve the fortunes of the ailing Atlantic City, which include online gambling legalisation at Atlantic City land based casinos. |
