The Chinese government, it seems, is displeased with online activities, included are specifically online casino activities, and ‘unhealthy game play.’ Though the report was not clear on exactly the actions intended, news reports were clear on the list faults of the internet provided to the 8th Forum on Internet Media of China. The Forum, which took place in Chongqing last week, heard a list of complaints made by the Minister of the State Council Information Office, Mr. Wang Chen, who began his tirade with an explanation that the Internet is being misused by the hundreds of millions of Chinese with computer access. His list constituted the top ten worrying trends as observed by his office. Though online casinos were not the first on the list, they weren’t far behind. The number one space was occupied by the trend of ‘spreading rumors,’ whereas the runner-up was ‘exaggerated’ or sensationalist news reports. Gambling made it into lucky number three spot, partnered with pornography- though it was phrased that the problems arose in how online casino information was handled. Following came invasion of privacy and harassment. Wang included in his presentation a recommendation to regulate the growing internet community, stating that the ‘trends’ were creating challenges in controlling online streaming. His appeals were directed primarily to internet stakeholders, asking them to take responsibility and assist in eliminating some of the ‘objectionable content’ from the World Wide Web. Other bad online habits keeping Wang up at night included ‘unhealthy game playing,’ online fraud, selling illegal or substandard goods and products, stealing personal information/financial details, spamming & junk mail and finally, spreading malicious computer viruses. |
