Their competition set for December 28th is designed in hopes of breaking their world record set in August of 2007 by seating 35,000 people for a poker game. The announcement came at the beginning of the month when Poker Stars.com opened up the sign-up for the 2008 tournament on their website under ‘Tournament: Special category.’ The game is being marketed as the largest of its kind ever, exactly headed the World’s largest single online poker tournament, for the Guiness Book of World Records. Poker Stars’ goal is to simultaneously seat 35,000 players at 3,500 tables to battle it out for a $500,000 guaranteed cash prize, five times as much as last year’s world record breaking tournament. They certainly have a chance of pulling it off, as well, being the world’s foremost online source for the game of poker. Weekend tallies consistently show as many as 80,000 players participating in online poker games through the group, and the opportunity to be part of a World Record as well as a chance for $500K is certainly going to encourage participation. The seats will cap at 35,000 and are open to United States citizens. Buy-in is priced at only $10+1, opening up the opportunity for high- and low-rollers alike. The site sums up the promotion: “This is an official attempt at the Guinness world record for World’s Largest Poker Tournament! Each blind level will run for 10 minutes, making play in the tournament similar to a turbo. Tables will be 10 handed and the official prizes will be announced after the registration period closes. Players are permitted to sign up until two minutes before the tournament begins.” The competition is scheduled to start at 15:30 ET on Sunday, December 28th. Last year’s record breaking online poker tournament hosted 20,000 players competing for a $100,000 prize.
