With the scale of the Dikshit admission of guilt to the Department of Justice for his actions against US gambling laws making innumerable waves throughout the online casino community, it comes as no surprise that the even the largest and most respected groups have expressed views on the settlement made. This week saw such a statement being issued by one of the most revered associations on the matter.

The Poker Players Alliance has released their take on Party Gaming’s former owner Anurag Dikshit’s admission of guilt and subsequent $300 million settlement with the DoJ. Despite the antiquity of the law broken, the 1961 Wire Act as opposed to the more recent and certainly more contested 2006 UIGEA, the PPA maintains that the deal struck between the government entity and the former internet casino mogul was a personal decision. Despite the majority of the opinions floating about the web, the PPA’s formal statement, issued by chairman of the Alliance, Alphonse D’Amato, states that the move does not set any precedent for future cases for Wire Act or UIGEA transgressions. Neither does it clarify any modern interpretations of the Wire Act.
The message goes however agree on the general consensus that persecution under the ’61 law is confusing and questionable. American groups such as US horse racing are also in contention with the law, despite the fact that such bets are perfectly legal as they apply to the UIGEA.

D’Amato encourages US legislators to clear up matters sooner rather than later to diminish the negative impact of future repeats. His mention of a decision made by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in which it was decided that the ’61 Wire Act was intended to curb telephone betting, rather than online gambling, gives a new point on which the online community can consider the legalities.
