There's a battle developing in Austria in regards to their new movements in legislation that supports a monopolistic system as it relates to online casinos. On one side stands Finance Minister Wilhelm Molterer; on the other, Bwin is gearing up for opposition. The online gambling group based out of Vienna, Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG has put out their intentions by hiring a law team to look into the future of fighting against Molterer. Unfortunately, state monopolies such as Casino Austria are backing the new proposals and may but a link in Bwin's defense. Fortunately, Austria is a member of the European Union and therefore is bound by the laws of the EU, specifically those applying to free and open trade between member nations. Bwin has asked their legal team to specifically look at defensive means to prevent the new suggested legislation using the EU trade laws as a basis. The so-called Gambling Act does not take the open trade requirements into account, despite the already active influx of protests from online gambling groups. Despite their strong member base in Austria, neither Manfred Bodner nor fellow co-chief executive officer, Norbert Teufelberger were in any way notified of the upcoming proposals in favor of state monopolies. The affrontal by the minister has motivated them to take action against what many are calling an "unconstitutional" bill. The opposers have not only EU laws on their side but a number of closed court cases to look to as well. It's not only the nations tax profits under contention; while money is certainly a driving factor, THE driving factor, employment of over 800 people by Bwin in and around Vienna also hangs in the balance. Teufelberger reported to the Austrian news source OE24.at that expansion in the region had been put on hold indefinitely until the proposal disruption can be resolved. Technological advances as well, have ceased operations. In the mean time, activity in Austria's division of Bwin is centered on their law team. To this end, Teufelberger has said he expects their counter-proposal will be ready for presentation to the Finance Ministry by the end of the week. He has even gone so far that as part of the proposal encouraging open trade for all online casinos in Austria, promising to pay taxes on profits made in the nation. |
