Somebody is definitely in trouble after the confusion and eventual cancellation of a major Poker Tour last weekend in Latin America. The event was to be held in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico and began last Friday with 242 players including a number of big names in the poker world. Then, something broke down and the tournament was abruptly cancelled, sending gamblers home disappointed, and Poker Tour executives angry. Apparently, what went wrong, no one knows. The Tour was able to start off on time, all paperwork and approval processes being complete and signed off by the Mexican Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB.) The tournament events were set up at the Marival Resorts and Suites in Nuevo Vallarta for the Poker Stars’ Latin America Tour. Game play began on time, with a total of 242 players buying in for the price of $2,500. Gaming names like Victor Ramdin and Greg Raymer were still playing in round 9 when somewhere, something went wrong, that allegedly no one can confirm. The remaining 89 players were stopped mid-game play by local gaming officials, who up to this point, were in attendance and observing the competition diligently. The gaming license was pulled and everyone was escorted from the room: officials, players, staff and media were escorted off property. The Poker Stars associates went immediately into negotiations to resolve whatever issue had arisen, to no avail. At this time of writing, no answers as to what went down have been given. With the final cancellation of further game play, the pot will be divided among those 89 players still in the game when the license was pulled in Round 9. Players will receive each around $5,000 from the prize pool, and leftover monies will be redistributed to players based on chip count. Everyone also receives an additional $500 for the disruption. Organizers for the Latin America Poker Tour made the following statement after the fact: “The Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) confirms that it is canceling the poker tournament in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, due to an indefinite suspension served on one of its local partners. The LAPT states it has cooperated fully and in good faith with the requirements outlined by the Mexican government. As the LAPT complied with every rule stipulated by the Code of the Mexican Federal Law of Games and Raffles, the reasons for suspension are being reviewed by lawyers of all parties." |
